When using alternative forms of shopping such as carnivals, swap meets and trunks, BBB recommends taking extra precautions. Although consumers can find great deals, these types of purchases propose an inherent risk. In order to you’re your money and information safe BBB has the following tips:
Cash, Check or Credit:
When dealing with unknown parties it is a good idea to keep your personal information personal. When possible, use cash as your form of payment; no personal information will be divulged, and no risks beyond the price you paid. However, it must be mentioned that when using cash you cannot dispute the charges. These purchases tend to be final.
Contact Information:
When an item does not perform as promised, most consumers will return to the retailer. That, typically, is not the case in these situations. To better your chances of making a good purchase, have as much contact information from the seller as possible. If they are unwilling to provide you with that information, you may want to think twice about completing the purchase.
Check it Twice:
Before purchasing any items, especially electronics, check the purchase closely. Make sure all components are included and are in working order. If they claim the item is new: check the packaging, condition of the item and look for warranties. Also, find the VIN number on the item; if it is missing or has been scratched off, that item may be stolen.
The Approach:
If you are approached on the street, use precaution. Most professionally licensed sales people will not attempt to sell you goods out of their car. However, if you are interested, look for logos, phone numbers and licenses numbers on their vehicle. Ask the seller for references and to see paperwork to verify the sale of the good. But, always trust your gut; if it feels 'sketchy', it probably is.
You get what you pay for:
When purchasing items in this manner, consumer recourse is usually a difficult task. Many people sell without licenses, receipts, etc. So before you make any purchase, be sure that you understand the risks involved. Additionally, if expensive items are extremely underpriced, you may want to ask yourself why the seller would make those price cuts.
In the end, if you are willing to take the chance on the seller and product, remember the above advice to make the most informed decision possible.
